Letter From John S. Kirkland, M.D., Ph.D., FACS
Dear Coller Society Members and Friends,
I am writing to share my enthusiasm for the 62nd year of our Society. As the officers and Council consider the challenges to and opportunities for the Society, I want to challenge you to you for renew your commitment to the work of The Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society. We are eagerly anticipating to 56th Clinical Meeting of the Society in Ann Arbor this fall.
The Coller Society is the only named surgical society recognized by the American College of Surgeons as a legitimate academic Society, but it is so much more. Our most important activities are the support and mentoring of fellows, residents, and students as they begin their careers in surgery.
Dr. Coller was best known as a mentor, teacher and as an intensely collaborative leader. He welcomed surgeons from the global surgical community to come and study in Ann Arbor, and he travled and lectured widely. The Society emulates these activities through the Coller Tours for residents and the Coller Research Fellowship for young newly trained surgeons. It is a pleasure to read their reports of the Tours and to hear the presentations of research efforts supported by the Research Fellowship.
One of the most significant annual activities of the Society is the Richard E. Fry Memorial lecture, and it gives me intense pleasure to announce Dr. P. Terrance O'Rourke as the 2010 Richard E. Fry lecturer at the meeting this fall in Ann Arbor. Dr. O'Rourke is an innovative leader in the organized delivery of healthcare and has warm and deep ties with the Fry Family and is a distinguished member of the Coller Society. We eagerly await his contributions.
Again, I ask you all to remember why you became a member of the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, the friendships and mentoring of the members who nominated and supported you for membership, and the unique mission of the Society, to Promote the Art and Science of Surgery, to Foster Education and to Perpetuate Friendships.
I look forward to seeing you in Ann Arbor in the fall.
Your President,
John S. Kirkland, M.D., Ph.D., FACS
