Letter from Mike and Linda Daugherty

July 16, 2007

Dear Coller Society Members and Guests:

This is an update on the 53rd meeting of the Coller Society to be held in Whitefish, Montana September 27-30, 2007. This is an outstanding chance to combine the intellectual and social advantages of the Society with a visit to the "last best place" at a beautiful time of year.

Travel: Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) is 15 minutes from Whitefish. Complimentary shuttle service to Grouse Mountain Lodge is provided if they are notified. Access to all major car rental companies is available at the airport, and also at the hotel through local agencies. Cars will not be necessary for the planned group activities, but will be needed for some of the optional activities.

Registration: Please use our printable registration form or register and pay with a credit card online.

Remember: Deadline for Hotel Guaranteed Rates/Rooms - August 15, 2007 The Grouse Mountain Lodge: http:www.grousemountainlodge.com Telephone: 877-862-1505

Schedule: Council meeting on Thursday at the hotel.

Thursday evening Welcome reception at the Grouse Mountain tent, featuring John Dunnigan, northwest Montana's premier musician/entertainer.

Scientific programs Friday and Saturday mornings at the hotel.

Special presentation for all attendees and spouses Friday morning by Dr. Harold Stearns, one of the foremost experts on the Lewis and Clark expedition

Friday evening: 5:30-8:00 PM-private gallery hop in Whitefish with wine and hors d'oeuvres. Dinner on your own at one of many excellent restaurants nearby (pick up list at registration desk).

Saturday evening: dinner dance at the hotel featuring music by The Loose Caboose

Sunday morning: farewell breakfast at the hotel.

Weather: As always, unpredictable, most likely in the 70's during the day, likely mid-40's late at night.

Dress: Very casual. Coats and ties seldom seen in town, jeans and shorts accepted everywhere. Dinner dance as always.

Optional activities: Point of emphasis: there are maximums and minimums for the planned optional activities, so please be sure to register for these.

Friday: Raft trip down the middle fork of the Flathead River, water conditions permitting (all equipment provided, not dangerous, though it may be wet). Car pooling (30 minutes) necessary.

Hike(3.8 miles one way and 2400 foot elevation gain) to the summit of Big Mountain for fabulous views of Glacier Park peaks and the Flathead Valley. Carpooling (15 minutes) necessary

Saturday: Golf tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.

Tennis tournament at Grouse Mountain courts

Sea kayaking: 3 hour guided trip on beautiful Whitefish Lake, all equipment provided, no experience necessary.

Optional independent activities everyday:

Visiting here without seeing Glacier Park would be a shame. Our plans for a group trip were thwarted by Mother Nature and road construction in the park. Hopefully the road will still be open to the Continental Divide, and you can rent a car for the afternoon to see this jewel of the national parks system. The west park entrance is about 30 minutes from the hotel. Up to date info http://www.nps.gov/glac.

Fly-fishing: half-day guided trips and lake fishing available through Lakestream Fly Fishing lakestream.com.

Biking: rentals, maps, etc. available through Glacier Cyclery glaciercyclery.com

Hiking, horseback riding, boat cruises, fitness center activity, spa treatments and much more can all be arranged through Montana Adventures Company at the hotel--contact mac@montanasfinest.com.

Shopping, museum visits, visits to the tasting room of the microbrewery are only a shuttle ride from the hotel.

Extra golf: check http:www.golfmontana.net. Other info sites:www.whitefishvisit.com, http://www.grousemountainlodge.com,mdmd007@aol.com.

We look forward to seeing all of you.

Mike and Linda Daugherty
